Biography

Wendy Weile Zhou is an upcoming Postdoctal Research Associate at the East Asia Center & Miller Center at the University of Virginia. She is graduating with a Ph.D. degree in Communication Studies at Georgia State University (GSU) this summer. Her research focuses on Chinese political discourse, global/transnational journalism, diaspora media and communication, has been appeared on the the China Journal, Asian Journal of Communication, and the forthcoming book series China under Xi Jinping: an Interdisciplinary Assessment (Brill). Her dissertation examines Chinese transnational journalists’ news practices, labor conditions, and career paths. Before joining GSU, she served as the Chinese editor of Global Investigative Journalism Network (GIJN) and research assistant at the Journalism and Media Studies Center at the University of Hong Kong, where she earned a master’s degree in journalism. She is also a freelancer for Chinese and English media, covering the nexus of journalism, politics and technology. Her articles appeared on the New York Times (Chinese version), Financial Times (Chinese version), Al Jazeera, Quartz, the Initium Media and other leading media outlets based in China and Hong Kong.
