Biography

Brantina Chirinda is a mathematics education researcher, teacher educator, and former public school teacher. She is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, and a research associate at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa. Dr Chirinda holds a PhD in Mathematics Education from the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa. Her primary research interest is in the teaching and learning of mathematics in underserved populations. Using sociocultural approaches, her research focuses on i) generating interventions that assist in providing students with meaningful opportunities to engage with rich mathematical content and practices, particularly mathematical thinking and problem solving, and ii) exploring and understanding ways to support teachers in underserved schools to make their classrooms more equitable. For over 22 years, she has taught Mathematics and Mathematics Education courses in Zimbabwe, South Africa and the United States. Dr Chirinda is a co-author of the book “Helping Students Become Powerful Mathematics Thinkers: Case Studies and Methods on Teaching for Robust Understanding” (2023, Routledge) and editor of three volumes: “Mathematics,  Science and Technology Education in Zimbabwe: Research, Policy, and Practice” (2023, Peter Lang Publishing); “Mathematical Problem-solving in South Africa: Research and Practice” (2023, Unisa Press); and “Mathematics Education in Africa: The Fourth Industrial Revolution” (2022, Springer). She has published several conference proceedings, book chapters, and articles in accredited local and international journals. She has presented her work at national, regional, and international conferences and has been a reviewer for a wide range of local and international journals. Dr Chirinda leads a community project, Southern African Mathematics Empowerment Network (SAMENET), which is envisaged to empower female mathematics teachers and learners in the contexts of disadvantage.
