Biography
Julie Gorlewski is the Klara and Larry Silverstein Dean of the School of Education at Hunter College in Manhattan. Hunter is part of the City University of New York. She attended Buffalo State College where she completed her B.S. in Secondary English Education, and the University at Buffalo where she earned her M.S. in Elementary/Early Childhood Education and her Ph.D. in the Social Foundations of Education. Dr. Gorlewski’s teaching experiences span Pre-K through graduate school. During her decade as a high school English teacher (Maryvale Union Free School District), she established an English as a Second Language Program, served as coordinator of the district’s K-12 Language Arts Program, Coordinator of Instructional Technology, and was the founding director of the district’s high school Learning Center. At the higher education level, Dr. Gorlewski held tenure-track positions at SUNY New Paltz, and Virginia Commonwealth University - where she also served as the Chair of the Department of Teaching and Learning. Upon returning to UB in 2018, Dr. Gorlewski served as professor and Chair of the Department of Learning and Instruction in the Graduate School of Education. She was later named senior associate dean for teacher education and academic affairs. Dr. Gorlewski has published over a dozen books related to instructional practice, teacher education, and education policy - two of which were cited by the American Educational Studies Association; she has authored scores of peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters, and has delivered invited talks at numerous national and international conferences. Her service to the profession includes editorship of English Journal, a publication of the National Council of Teachers of English; co-director of the Equity and Social Justice Conference series; and co-chairmanship of the New York State Professional Standards and Practices Board for Teaching; and Commissioner for the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation.. Dr. Gorlewski has been the recipient of numerous awards from organizations she has served. These include the People Make a Difference Award (Cheektowaga Action Partnership), Provost Award for Excellence (SUNY New Paltz), and the Lifetime Achievement Award (English Department - Buffalo State College)
