Biography
Haishan “Sam” Yang holds an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from the University of Southern California and has nearly a decade of experience supporting international students and international student organizations. Sam is bilingual (Mandarin-English) and has served in various roles across residential life, student conduct, first-year experience, and international student organizations at the University of Southern California (USC), the University of Vermont, and Boston College. Sam’s research examines the sense of belonging among international students and how institutions strike a balance between compliance and care in their conduct systems. He brings extensive supervision skills, crisis response experience, and is certified in Mental Health First Aid. Sam also has strong leadership experience and is actively involved with both ACPA and NAFSA. He comes from a K-12 teaching background and is trained in Restorative Practices, applying this lens to his work in student conduct and intercultural engagement. As a former international student, Sam brings both lived and professional expertise to culturally responsive student affairs practice.
