Biography

Dr. Mbuthia has a PhD in Heritage Management (History and Archeology) from University of Pau and the Adour Countries, France; an MSc. in Applied Ecology and Conservation from University of East Anglia, UK; a postgraduate certificate in Museum Public Programming from University of Victoria, Canada; and a Bsc. (Hons) in Environmental Studies from Kenyatta University, Kenya. Dr. Mbuthia is currently the Deputy Director in charge of heroes square, monuments and research at the National Heroes Council, Kenya. Before joining the National Heroes Council in 2020, Dr. Mbuthia had worked at the National Museums of Kenya (NMK) for over 20 years in various capacities including as a Museum Education Officer; Head of Education; Head of Public Programming; and Assistant Director in charge of Antiquities Museums, Sites and Monuments. He has extensive experience both at National and International levels including in Culture; Heritage management, policy, research, education and interpretation; Museum Management; Memorialization; Nationhood and Identity; Community engagement; Sustainable society; monitoring and evaluation; and fund raising. He has also published substantially in these fields. He has been a member of and has served in various national and international professional bodies including: 1.International Journal of Intangible Heritage (IJIH) Governing Board Member 2.ICOM (International Council of Museums) 3.Commonwealth Association of Museums (CAM) Governing Board Member 4.Group for Children in African museums (GCAM) 5.Art Council for the African Studies Association (ACASA) 6.American Alliance of Museums (International Fellow) 7.
