Biography
Daniel Giesbrecht is a researcher at the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies (CEIS20/UC) and a guest lecturer at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FLUC/UC) at the University of Coimbra, where he is also in the final stage of his Ph.D. in the Contemporary History Program. His thesis, already qualified by the Scientific Council, is titled“From Regeneration to Redemption: Eugenics, Race, and Biopolitics in Brazil and Portugal (1918–1949),” funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology — FCT (2021.04805.BD). He holds a Bachelor's degree in History from the Pontifical Catholic University of Campinas (2001); a Bachelor's degree in Pedagogy from the Integrated Colleges of Amparo (2004); a Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences from the Metropolitan University of Santos (2013); and a Master's degree in Education from the Pontifical Catholic University of Campinas (2005). His teaching career as a primary school teacher focuses on History, Philosophy, and Sociology. In higher education, he has teaching experience in Business Administration, Pedagogy, History, Law, Literature, and Psychology courses, and has served as a Postgraduate Coordinator. Currently, he is developing work related to the “History of Sciences,” with an emphasis on the “History of Eugenics in Brazil and Portugal.” He is a member of various research groups in Portugal and abroad: “Science, Intellectuals, and Nation” (UNICENTRO); “History of Genetics and its impacts” (FIOCRUZ); “History, Memory, Public Policy” (CEIS20/UC); “History and Intellectuals:Culture, Politics, and Memory” (UEPG); “History of Evolution and Heredity in Brazil” (HSTM/University of Philadelphia). He is an associate member of the Portuguese Society of Anthropology and Ethnology (SPAE); an associate member of the National History Association of Brazil (ANPUH); and a full member of the Portuguese Association of Anthropology (APA).
