Biography

An Oppenheimer Memorial Trust Scholar, born in Ga-Habedi, Northwest Province, South Africa. Nyiko earned B-Tech degrees in vocal pedagogy. He is a proud Department of Vocal Arts graduate at Tshwane University of Technology in South Africa, where he studied with Anina Wassermann. Nyiko also holds a Master of Music Degree in Performance from Longy School of Music of Bard College in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, under the tutelage of Robert Honeysucker as a vocal instructor. Nyiko has an international reputation as a singer, learning conductor, educator, and adjudicator. He has served as an adjudicator for the South African School Choral Eisteddfod, the National Eisteddfod Academy, and various church music competitions. He is a novice researcher aspiring to become a full-time researcher in the vocal pedagogy field and regularly contributes to music education and performance studies through conference presentations, professional development offerings, and singing classes. He is highly regarded for his musical experience, expertise, and inspirational teaching style. Nyiko has performed for the former Speaker of the National Assembly of South Africa, Gwen Mahlangu-Nkabinde. He has also performed for the Korean Embassy and the Embassy of Israel in South Africa. He has received international bursaries from the National Arts Council of South Africa, the Office of the Mayor of the City of Tshwane, and the Department of Arts and Culture. Nyiko has collaborated with many professional, amateur, student, and adult groups. As a performing artist in singing, he has extensive experience with several theaters in America, France, and Austria. In the US, Nyiko performed in the premier of Saleiri’s La Grotta di Trofonio with Lowell House Opera at Harvard University. His operatic roles include Dulcamara (L’elisir d’amore), Trofonio (La Grotta di Trofonio), Masetto (Don Giovanni), Doctor (La Traviata), Antonio (Le Nozze di Figaro), 2nd Armoured Man/Priest/Sprecher (The Magic Flute), and Don Pedro de Hinoyosa (La Périchole). He also covered the role of Dandini (La Cenerentola). As a chorus singer, he performed with the Refugee Orchestra Project in Cambridge and New York, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle, Mozart’s Requiem, and Gounod’s Messe Solennelle de Sainte-Cécile. In 2017, he received a scholarship from the Austrian American Vocal Academy. In 2013, he received a scholarship from the Franco-American Vocal Academy in Périgueux, France, for a summer program. Nyiko was nominated for the Paris-Opera Award in France in October 2012 and competed in the fifth China International Vocal Competition in Ningbo in 2011. In 2016, he was a semi-finalist in the 12th Annual Peter Elvins Vocal Competition in Belmont, Massachusetts. He has taken master classes with acclaimed German Tenor Josef Protschka, Metropolitan Opera tenor William Lewis, Dutch baritone Maarten Koningsberger, and baritone Dawid Kimberg. Nyiko has performed numerous recitals and concerts in South Africa, Salzburg, Austria, France, and Cambridge, Massachusetts. He is currently a music lecturer in the Department of Humanities and Creative Arts at Walter Sisulu University and a PhD candidate at Rhodes University in the Department of Music and Musicology in South Africa. Nyiko is also a reviewer for several prestigious journals, including Jurnal Seni Musik, the American Journal of Education and Learning, the Social Sciences Journal, and the International Journal of Changes in Education (IJCE) from Bon View Publishing in Singapore, utilizing an open review management system. He has published articles in the International Journal of Learning, Teaching and Educational Research, and E-Bangi: Journal of Social Sciences In addition to his academic achievements, Nyikoi has successfully completed courses on strengthening Postgraduate Supervision and Disseminating Knowledge Through Publicationat Rhodes University in South Africa.
